Madurai Explorer
Madurai, one of the oldest living cities in the world, flourished around the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple. It was the seat of Tamil Sangam, patronized by the Pandya kings. Later ruled by the Cholas, followed by the Vijayanagara Nayaks who built many of the city's monuments, and eventually by the Mughals. Madurai is renowned as the cultural capital of Tamil Nadu and is often referred to as the 'Athens of the East'. Historical references by Megasthenes, Pliny, and Ptolemy describe its antiquity and importance.
